01 Water

  • Do you store drinking water for every person for at least three days, about a gallon per person per day, plus a share for pets?

  • Do you know how to make questionable water safer (a rolling boil, or unscented bleach at the current CDC dose) and keep those supplies in the house?

  • Do you know where the main water shutoff is, and has someone in the house actually found it?

02 Power

  • Can you light the rooms you use and charge a phone for three days if the grid is down?

  • If anyone depends on powered medical equipment, is there a backup you have tested, or a plan to leave for power?

  • Are carbon-monoxide alarms installed, and would any generator stay outdoors, away from doors and windows?

03 Shelter

  • Do smoke alarms work on every level, and does everyone know two ways out of each sleeping room?

  • Do you have a real plan for a summer power outage (cooling) and a winter outage (warmth) where you live?

  • Have you decided what would make you leave home, and named the place you would go?

04 Food

  • Is there several days of food that does not need a refrigerator, and a manual can opener if you store cans?

  • Could you feed the household for about two weeks if stores were closed, including infants, special diets, and pets?

  • Do you rotate stored food, and do you know the USDA time limits for a fridge and freezer during an outage?

05 Medical

  • Can you find a first-aid kit in the dark, and do you keep more than a few days of daily prescription medicines?

  • Does an adult in the house know basic bleeding control and when the right move is to call 911?

  • Are soap, sanitizer, trash bags, and any diapers or menstrual supplies stocked for a short disruption?

06 Comms

  • Can you receive weather warnings without a charged phone, such as with a NOAA Weather Radio?

  • Does every adult know an out-of-area contact and two meeting places (one near home, one farther)?

  • Is a paper list of key phone numbers stored with the kit, not only in a phone?

07 Safety

  • Do exterior doors lock, and have smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms been tested in the last month?

  • Have you kept photos of stockpiles, valuables, and your home layout off social media?

  • Do adults know when to call 911 versus a non-emergency police line?

08 Mobility

  • Is there a go-bag you could carry out quickly, and a smaller kit that already lives in the car?

  • Do you keep enough fuel to get clear of the neighborhood, plus two written routes?

  • Are children, pets, and anyone who needs help included, with carriers, seats, and medicines?

09 People

  • Has the household agreed who handles kids, pets, the go-bag, and utility shutoffs?

  • Is there someone outside the home who would check on you, and someone you would check on?

  • Have you walked through any part of the plan in the last year?

10 Money

  • Is there some cash in small bills at home, separate from a banking app?

  • Are copies of IDs, insurance, and key account info in a grab-and-go folder or stored securely offsite?

  • Do you know DisasterAssistance.gov is free, and that damage should be photographed before cleanup?
